Well, here goes my first post.

Ive been plaing around with Harmony 2007 and various other X10 devices for a while and im now at the stage where i want to integrate Harmony permantly.

However after trying various PC's from Win2K, XP and Vista all seem to have the same problem in that when Harmony is asked to control a device, be it from the interface or an Event, there is a considerable amount of time between the Harmony receiveing the request and the X10 module responding.

This is the case with my other X10 controllers, so i can only narrow it down to the current harmony setup.  I have tried both USB and standard serial connectors to the CM11 but the issue still remains.

Can any one offer any advice or better still a solution

Many Thanks

Hi techno,

How long is the time delay ? My X10 lights (etc.) turn on within a second or so when switched from the GUI. Please elaborate.

Hi Homer,

The delay can be from 10 to 60 seconds, sometimes not even received by the x10 device

Also after reading through the forum, i see harmony should show commands send by my other controllers.  Im not seeing these in Harmony.

Hi techno,

That, combined with the slow response times, points to noise on the mains wiring.

I'm afraid it's time to unplug everything, and then try Harmony switching. By a process of plugging things back in, you will find one or more items that affect X10 transmission.

Yes, I mean everything !! Fridges, freezers etc, just for the duration of the test.

You don't have the CM11 plugged in near to a surge suppression socket do you ?

I have a couple of surge protectors and will try taking these out of the equation. Half way through a mains re-wire.

I have been through this process when nothing worked and strangly it was my Virgin Cable Modem that was causing the issue, A filter sorted this out

Will give this as try and see what happens.

If i need to take the surge protectors out, will a filter also work on these?

Thanks for your help, will let you know how i get on.

Hi again techno,

The X10 signals sit at the zero crossing points of the mains sine wave, and anything that can absorb parts of ( or interfere with) the waveform can cause X10 problems. The surge protectors can do this very effectively !

Advice eh ? Well let's see:

  • Electrically noisy items can include switch mode power supplies (Pc's and just about all the phone and modem power supplies nowadays), and things with motors in.
  • The best place for the CM11 is by the fusebox as it is the centre of standard house wiring ring mains.
  • X10 installations involve quite a bit of experimentation if things don't work out of the box to get things right.

I must say though, that my X10 is all working well now, and I haven't had any modules fail on me (Unlike BBSB).

As for the lack of delays with Harmony, I have a mains powered PIR on the front of the house which:

1. Activates a mains relay, which closes a contact on a hacked BBSB rf remote control to output a command.
2. This signal is picked up by a BBSB V2 controller which sends the command to Harmony core.
3. Harmony core then sends a command to Harmony CCTV to start recording.

And it works ! I get lot's of CCTV recordings of people and cars going past my house

Morning Homer,

Ill be doing the tetsing this evening have i have completed the mains circuit re-wire.

Hopefully i will find the culprit device.  While the mains are powered down i will be taking your advice and having a dedicated circuit, with just the one socket from the Distrbution Unit soley for the CM11.

However i have a feeling that i will need some new 4-way extensions without the added surge protection.

The CCTV is next on my list

I guess the other possible common failure here is the CM11 itself. I was wondering if the CM11 had ever been used with a different program, as some of them download macro's into the CM11. That could cause problems for Harmony too. If this is the case, you will need to delete them, or unplug the CM11 with the batteries out overnight. The last one is a guess

Hmm, do Lets Automate still do their "rent an X10 test kit" service ?

Let us know how you are doing !

Im back,  Had some other issues to attened to,  otherwise i wouldn't have had an home to automate lol.

After further testing, i used a filter module on my Virgin Modem, this allowed the CM11 to detect other signals.  However this left me with the slow response time.  5 to 30 seconds, if at all.

I did the usual and unpluged everything, the culprit was the still the Virgin Modem.  I disconnected the power supply from the back of the modem and signals would pass through fine.  I have now changed the the power supply for the modem and everything works a treat :-)

Have now installed Harmony CCTV for trial.

Thanks and sorry for the delay.
