Name suggestions welcomed for the next version of Harmony.

Harmony 2009 (/2010, depending on release date)

Harmony 7 (It would be the 7th make build, not just copying MS!)

Something else - please specify (and if it's unusual / particularly clever, do explain the rationale )

Thanks all,

Rob

Thanks Chris,

My only concern with using they year is (within 12 months) it looks old......if that makes sense!

Whilst there have been a number of updates to Harmony 2007, and new components, anyone looking at it for the first time could be forgiven for asking "Isn't there a 2009 version- 2007 was a long time ago".....Or maybe not - perhaps I'm over-sensitive.

I'll put you down as half a vote for "7"

Cheers,

Rob

Ah yes never thought of it like that i think i remember me asking that question about being 2007

so change my half vote to a full one for Harmony 7

Not to put a dampner on any hard work but any idea when the next release is due, or fixes to the current product suite, especially now Windows 7 is released?  Will it be a pay for upgrade?  If so will the current products fall out of support?

Regards,

Craig

I know it runs on windows and not a good stable operating system but
how about taking a leaf off Apples tree and pick a theme for each major
upgrade (Panther,Tiger,Leopard,Snow Leopard).
That way you don't date it with the year but also give it an identity.

Perhaps.... As its called Harmony... Music.

Arpeggio, Allegro, bellecoso, fugue etc... there loads.

Just a thought...

I'll get my coat shall I?

O.S. Bashing aside .....it's a nice idea. A bit like the ubunutu wildlife naming conventions.

Therefore, you can leave you coat where it is

Cheers

Public Alpha/Beta - shortly after 1-Wire and IR Beta tests are complete.

It's mostly code complete - largely "under the bonnet" work - not sure if that answers your question or not :s

Will do Chris.

If you pop into the forum occasionally, you'll see announcements when Beta's / new releases are being launched.

Cheers,

Rob

Harmony 7 sounds OK - the only downside is it's easily perceived as a play on Windows . . .

Going with the theme of how you came up with 'Harmony' in the first place, is there a name that reflects the upgrades that the new release will contain?

Something about being more aware / able (1-wire etc) - more grown up - maybe even a latin or french version of this sort of word?

Maybe . . . just musing . . .

Cliff, I know what you mean about "copying windows"....but it is genuinely the 7th Major release. Harmony 5.x was replaced by Harmony 2007 (Version 6.x) - so 7 seems the natural choice. Perhaps people making the connection with Win7 isn't too bad a thing anyway? ....perhaps....

Appreciate your comments,

Rob

Appreciate what you're saying but you know that effect where a joke is only funny if you don't have to explain it? or a play on words only works if most people 'get it' . . . well you're [well we're actually] already having to explain the '7' title to justify it in your/our own mind(s) . . .

Plus, how old is windows 7 now and when will a replacement likely to come about? Will this be long enough to not suffer the 'shelf life' effect if you do think people will assocaite the '7' against Windows releases?

If (as) this is genuinely the 7th release, why not call it "Harmony Release Seven" or "Harmony RS" ?

That way you get the 7 in there but is less naturally associated with any Windows release?

or maybe we're (OK me) overthinking it a tad? ;)

ok how about this as an option;

Personally I have problems trying to keep track with what is the current version of software for a particular product.

Lets assume for the present that we can keep Rob busy and we get a new release each year (worst case every 2 years), so make life easy for all, lets call it Harmony 11 or 2011?
Sub release can then be called 11.1 etc.

Aghh - nooooo

The problem I have at present, is people see "Harmony 2007" (i.e. a Year based product version), and contact me asking why I stopped developing it in 2007, if it's still a current product etc. As you'll all know, Harmony (2007) has had several updates and new releases since 2007 - - - but to "joe public", shopping around for new Software, "Year Based" software versioning gets old within 12 months, by definition.

I *really* don't mind what it's called - - the features and functionality are far more important to me - delivering what *you* want.

The one thing I don't want to do, is use "Year Based Versioning", for the reason listed above.

If the community Decide to go for "Harmony Purple Edition" - so beit - - - anything but 2010 / 2011!!
